A fellow patient who reads me on the internet violated one of my boundaries today. They contacted me about something I’d written they felt offended by. I replied without snark or aggression that while I totally respected their opinion I was not open to discussing the subject with them at this time. That boundary was immediately met by them saying I was silencing them, that I’m close-minded for not consenting to the conversation when they wanted it, that they were “disappointed” to learn I wasn’t “woke” like I appeared to be in my writing, and that I was “clearly so broken inside” healing is impossible for me. And so, lest anyone else be harmed by the same delusion: If you believe ANYONE to be “woke,” perfect, have all the answers, have endless emotional resources for all people at all times, please do the right thing and fire us. Unfollow, delete, then choose a Saint or spirit animal as the woke role model, because humans will only let you down. The people you read on the Internet are not gurus or role models, they are just meat sacks with WiFi access. The people who give advice are not omnipotent, they simply have an education in some areas you may not. The ones you see as “woke,” enlightened, are not different from you—they yell, cry, get depressed, have triggers, say dumb things, move their bowels, and do all that at LEAST as often as they say the perfect thing, soothe your anxiety, answer your question, or demonstrate exemplary compassion. (And they are, almost always, never compensated for the research, answers, or experiences they share.) No one working in healing is without wounds and needs of their own...if they had no wounds or healing to do, they’d be useless to you. And if they don’t lay down and enforce boundaries, they will be unable to tend or heal those wounds. We all deserve to heal. We all deserve to be seen as the meat sacks we are, not these idealized fantasies projected onto us by others. There are no gurus anywhere, just other people at some point on the same path you’re on, trying their best.
